Nafrini... Her name meant 'She brings the beauty' and everyone who saw her was more than ready to agree. She had flawless tanned skin, eyes like water, so deep that you could look into them forever, and the softest long brown hair, that was hidden behind the most perfectly made black wig around. She was tall, with a firm body that was still curved in the places that made men think of her in terms of a wife.

Still, she was no ones wife. In fact, she was a priestess. A priestess of Ra. And that made her even more of a catch. Everyone wanted to marry a priestess, as they were the most holy of women. But, Nafrini didn't want to marry. That would be a problem, eventually. But for the time being, it wouldn't.

Word was getting around to the temples that there was trouble. And once or twice she'd heard reference to the dead Pharaoh Akhenaten. But, the young Priestess, put it out of her mind. Why they would be talking about him, she had no clue, but she was beginning to get curious.

The sand was getting everywhere after a long walk, rubbing on the skin. The desert sun was burning from a steel sky. Akhenaten sighed and pushed at his hair. Once it had been hidden under his crown, but now it was uncombed and sandy due to long days under the burning sun in the unforgiving winds of the desert. However, these times had long since passed and he tried his best, not to think about it.

The man, who seemed so much younger than his years, wove his way through the crowded streets of Thebes. It was a bustling city, full of life and people. He sighed. It was not often that he had to leave the small underground city; but this time it had been inevitable.

His destination was the great temple’s plaza, where – under the watchful eye of the patron Ra – he hoped to find what he was looking for. Papyri. His own library had failed him on this one special quest, however he knew that entering the city was not one of his smartest ideas, while entering the temple district was close to suicide.

Whispering a small prayer to his one and only god, he stepped forth from a narrow street onto the plaza in front of the great temple. Countless people were there, looking at the stands, trading items and money. Careful and with an ever watchful eye, Akhenaten stepped to a rather empty stand. Papyri, empty and full of hieroglyphs were there. A small smile crept across the tanned face, while the merchant was regarding him with suspicion.

Akhenaten could not think badly of him. Dressed in old rugs of something that could have been expensive once upon a time and with no golden jewelery he must give an impression of extreme poverty. The man preferred it this way. A beggar was left in peace, unless he had his hand in foreign pockets. Carefully picking up one of the papyri, Akhenaten read through the text.

Nafrini slowly walked through the market, her robes flew slightly around her, giving her even more of the impression of some kind of Goddess walking among the mortals. The young woman never once claimed to be that, for to do so was to commit the greatest blasphemy. Instead, she served the Gods, hoping to earn herself a wonderful place in the after life.

She saw the man in the ragged cloths and looked away. It was best not to stare and she was choosing not to. Instead, the Priestess walked by, waving at the vender who seemed to be concentrating more on making sure that the man didn't steal anything than waving back. Which was fine with Nafrini.

She wasn't looking to buy anything. Instead, she just wanted to look around the market place at what it had to offer. It was a weekly thing for her. Whenever she could get out, and get away, she would go around, looking for something good or interesting.

As the merchant looked up for only a moment, Akhenaten threw a glance into the same direction. A priestess walked by, her robes flying in the slight breeze. She was quite young and wore the ornaments of a woman consecrated to Ra. In another time Akhenaten had thought her quite stunning, but now his worries and thoughts lay elsewhere.

Frowning slightly, he turned around, back to his papyrus. However, he was not able to concentrate. Once again looking over his shoulder, he tried to catch another glimpse of the priestess. Had she become suspicious? He didn’t suppose as she was walking along the stalls, looking here and there, but not buying anything.

However, Akhenaten knew that it would not last long if this young woman caught him reading. Reading, he knew, was an art only few were capable of and so he turned back to the vender.

“How much for this?” he asked in a low voice, not wanting to attract unnecessary attention, though this still hit the merchant by surprise.
“Too much for you”, he scowled and tried to get his papyrus back.

Akhenaton sighed slightly and produced a small pouch. “Just tell me the price!”, he commanded in a voice that was letting no room for disobedience.
But still, the merchant stared for a moment then named his price.
“Thank you”, Akhenaten gave back and passed him a few turquoise stones.

Nafrini was trying to mind her own business, as she walked through the stalls. It was a nice day, slightly breeze, and still warm. However, there was a strange feeling, like a tingling down her spine. Someone was watching her, or at least giving an extended look her way.

As she turned around, trying to spot who it was that had been looking at her. Most of them seemed to be minding their own business. However, she knew that one of them would have had to have been looking at her. Something told her it was true.

Somehow her eyes past over the man that seemed to be demanding something from the merchant that she was known to talk to. So, the girl walked forward, trying to see what was going on.

Seeing the stone, she had to wonder what such a poor looking man was doing with that kind of money. As she got closer, she wondered what was with this man, was he stealing from somewhere?

The merchant eyed the stone suspiciously, then nodded slightly and put it in his own money pouch. “Here, your papyrus”, he said hesitantly, passing the scroll over to him.

Nodding once again, Akhenaten reached for it and stored it away safely in his aown, small bag, he had with him. Satisfied, he threw a polite smile at the vender, then turned away, when he felt he was being watched.

Turning around, he soon spotted the priestess. Her eyes were fixed upon him. For one moment a shiver ran down his spine. Did she know? Had she watched him giving the merchant a precious stone?

He scowled, pushing past some people, getting ever closer towards her. She had not called the guards from what he could see. They were still guarding the temple entrance, trying to prevent people from taking anything valuable out of the building.

“Aten, guard me from harm”, he whispered under his breath. For a moment Akhenaten didn’t know whether to get to her or leave the temple district. However, if he did latter, he doubted, he’d be able to enter Thebes anytime soon again.

So he decided for the third option: Trying to forget about the priestess and minding his own business; though that proved to be harder than anything. As soon as he turned to visit another merchant, he caught himself looking over his shoulder and watching the priestess every other step.

After spending a few seconds looking at the stall that the man had been looking at, she gathered that he had bought some papyrus. And she wonder again what he could be up to. There was some suspicion in her mind, but she knew that he hadn't done anything to warrant it. Instead of giving up, however, she moved after him.

She took in his once nice robes, the battered and dirty look. And she wondered if he'd found those clothes or if they were his. He wasn't as young as she was, but he was not too old.

Blue eyes looked the way of the guards and she then flashed them to the man. She was not calling them, instead she was forewarning them, just in case. Nafrini's suspicious mind made her walk to the merchant that the man was at. She smiled at the merchant and threw a glance at the man, before moving away, to the next merchant.

The priestess followed him. Furrowing one eyebrow, Akhenaten tried to concentrate solely on the stand in front of him. Various artefacts lay for sale and the man eyed them over. Finally he picked up a golden ankh, carved finely with some turquoise inlays.

Again the vender looked at him suspiciously. Akhenaten still looked not more trustworthy than mere moments ago, so he didn’t even notice. Carefully he let his hands wander over the cool surface and his long and agile fingers took in everything even more.

Indeed, this was a true piece of art, made by a master of his trade. “How much do you want for this?”, he asked the merchant, with the pronunciation of the upper class in his words. That was when Akhenaten realized the priestess following him had left off for the next merchant, but not before she had thrown him a quick glance; her blue eyes were telling of suspicions, if he wasn’t getting too paranoid.

Passing over another turquoise stone, Akhenaten stored away the Ankh and pondered. Maybe it would be better if he left now for the desert. It was unfortunate, though, as he still hadn’t gotten everything he needed. So he was looking over at the priestess once again. Thinking hard, he didn’t realize that he was staring.

Nafrini couldn't stop from glancing at the man every so often. If times had been different, she might have admitted that she found him rather attractive. But, he was a very suspicious man, and she wasn't going to admit anything like that.

And he was suspicious. It wasn't just his once fine clothes. There was an aura about him, something that told her that he wasn't what he was presenting himself to be. It was strange, and disconcerting.

She felt it again as she was talking to a man about a necklace. She found the object to be more beautiful that any she'd seen in a long while. There were green and blue gems all around it, and even a few amber ones. As she was asking where it came from, that feeling down her spine returned and she turned around, looking right at the man again.

"Would you excuse me?" She asked before walking away, without waiting for a response and walking to the man. "Hello." She said.

Just as he had realized that he had been staring and turned to leave the temple district, Akhenaten heard someone approach. The priestess, he realized as he threw one glance into the direction of the commotion. She had abandoned the merchant and decided to come up to him.

Greeting him friendly, Akhenaten furrowed an eyebrow. “Hello”, he answered, reaching for the ankh in his pocket. Not that he was afraid of her stealing things from him, but to conceal it even more.

Meeting her blue eyes with his amber ones, he tilted his head to one side. “How may I help you?” - And realized too late that this wasn’t the choice of words of a simple beggar. Even his pronunciation had to give him away as it was too defined and educated.

Nafrini wrinkled her nose in confusion. The man was very well spoken, and that didn't fit either. Her eyes became slits as she approached him again, closer.

"You have been staring at me." She said, her eyes sure to be showing her suspicion. "I was curious if I may know you." She told him, hiding the fact that she was trying to figure him out as she looked him over.

"Are you from around here?" She inquired, stopping to stand in front of him, her eyes moving from his amber eyes, to his brown hair and then down over him. It was not something that she was used to.

Akhenaton shook his head only slightly. “I am very sorry, indeed”, he answered, still careful but not as suspicious as mere moments ago. “But I don’t suppose we are acquainted, as I am not from around here.” A small smile crept over his lips as he became less tense. He had indeed been staring, lost in his own darker thoughts.

He eyed her over once again; her flowing robes, her black wig and her finely carved face. A very beautiful woman, indeed. For only a moment his eyes fell upon the grand temple of Ra, then his attention was back on the stranger in front of him.

“You come from the temple of Amun-Ra, don’t you?” It was a statement as it was already known to him. “I am sorry, I didn’t mean to be impolite; I was merely lost in thoughts.” Akhenaten hoped it would be enough that she left him alone.

Nafrini watched him, trying to figure out the feeling. "Where are you from?" She asked at his statement about them not knowing each other because he was not from around there. She knew that there was no reason not to believe him, but something was screaming at her.

"I do." She confirmed, drawing herself back mentally. Of course she had the markings of a Priestess, so she didn't know why she was shocked that he knew. She nodded and looked away. "I suppose I should let you go back to your shopping." She finally said. "I bid you farewell."

With that said, she turned to walk back to the temple, knowing that her presence wouldn't do much in impeding him if he had something bad truly in mind. Still, she took one final look back at him as she walked. Was it because she was suspicious, or was it because she wanted to make sure that she wasn't seeing things? He really was attractive, but she wasn't hung up on looks. It must have been her suspicion.

Akhenaton tried to think of something that would satisfy her curiousity. That he came from an underground palace or even Akhetaten was the truth, but one he’d never admit. “I’m from a small town”, he decided finally, before silence fell.

However, he didn’t even know if the priestess had heard his remark, as she bid him farewell and made his way back through the crowd. As soon as the priestess was out of his sight – or so Akhenaten thought – he breathed a sigh of relief and whispered a few words. The young woman had spoken to him; maybe her next way was leading her to the guards. And if they found out, what he was carrying, they would surely love to look into it.

So he was calling upon the power of Aten. It was not a safe task, as the temple of Re was so close by. Weaving a spell, he tried to hide his few belongings from view. The papyrus, the ankh; both became invisible to the unsuspecting eye.

Once again, throwing a careful look around, if someone had sensed the foreign magic, solar but not Ra’s power, but he thought himself safe. So he hurried, pushing past the people, passing the temple close by, only throwing as much as a glance into the premises.

Nafrini made it back to the temple, wondering why she had been so suspicious. It wasn't like her. She wasn't usually one to walk up to someone in the market just for staring at her. It was too.. Crass, and attention seeking. She didn't need that, since so many people already looked at her, and she had her own business to take care of.

As she walked through the temple, she heard more talking, that just escalated. Something about the deceased Pharaoh again. And something about magic, or the possibility of magic. No one seemed to be sure. Which wasn't common around there. They usually had a good knowledge of what was going on.

The Priestess looked around before gathering her robes and hurrying to her rooms. She wanted to find out what was going on around her, and she wanted to find out right away. If only the people would talk to her.

Akhenaten sighed with relief as he had left the temple district. Looking over his shoulder back to the crowd in front of the tall temple building, he closed his eyes for a moment. This time had been close.

Reaching for the ankh in his pocket, the man turned away again, making his way back to the entrance, when it happened. A yell, a commotion, just behind him. Curious as he was, he turned around again, trying to see the reason for this turmoil.

That was when a middle-aged man tried to push past him, lost his balance and fell right into his arms. “Thief, hold him!”, a merchant was yelling back at the temple district, while guards, were trying to catch up with the man, their swords drawn.

Cursing under his breath, Akhenaten tried to shove the man off of him, before he got more attention that he wanted to. However, it was too late. The guards had already spotted him and were coming straight to him.

“Aton, help”, he whispered and finally got rid of the thief and tried to vanish between the countless people – who were staring at him, he realized one moment later

The winds blew quickly around the Priestess as she tried to make her way away from the temple. She had an important message to Luxor, and it gad to get there quickly, the only problem was that she was going through a sand storm. The skies and areas around her were orange, making just a grainy blanket that she was having trouble looking through.

She managed to get away, walking what felt like miles in two hours. But, she knew that it probably wasn't as much. Really, the woman didn't know how far she went, or how far away she was from the temple.

It wasn't long before she was feeling tired. The storm was making her work harder but move slower. She started to feel like she'd gotten turned around somewhere. All of that walking with no results... Then, halfway through, the woman's legs collapsed on the ground. She didn't have the strength to get back up. She tried, but it wasn't happening.
